WAS IST CHICLE?

Chicle - die Kaumasse von XyliVita Natur - ist der milchige Saft des Sapote-Baumes (Manilkara Zapota), der in den tropischen Wäldern der Halbinsel Yucatan, Belize und Guatemala beheimatet ist. Heute ist diese Region, die als Herz der Maya-Welt und als Gran Petén bekannt ist, die zweitgrößte Landfläche, die mit tropischen Regenwäldern auf dem amerikanischen Kontinent bedeckt ist.

Der Sapote ist der häufigste Baum im Dschungel des Gran Petén. Sapote Bäume können eine Höhe von über 40 Meter und einen Durchmessern von mehr als einem Meter erreichen. Chicle wird während der Regenzeit von Juli bis Februar geerntet, wenn der Latex-Saft besser fließt. Zur Gewinnung dieses Chicle genannten Stoffes wird der Baum mit einer Reihe miteinander verbundener, zickzack-artiger Einschnitte versehen, aus denen der Milchsaft austritt. Um ein Absterben der Bäume zu verhindern, wird diese Prozedur nur alle zwei oder drei Jahre vorgenommen. Derzeit arbeiten in den Dschungeln des Gran Petén etwa 5000 Chicleernter.

Die Verarbeitung und Hersteller von XyliVita Natur findet vor Ort statt, was den Arbeitern und Menschen zu Gute kommt. Chicle ist aus ökologisch und sozialen Aspekten 100 % nachhaltig. Die Gewinnung von Chicle trägt überdies zum Erhalt des Regenwaldes und seiner Ursprünglichkeit bei.

Die Ernte wird neben dem Ministerium für Ökologie durch drei Institutionen kontrolliert und zertifiziert:

FSC (nachhaltige Forstwirtschaft), Florida Organic Growers (biologische Landwirtschaft) and Fair Trade e.V. (WildThinks, 2001).
