Sometimes simple is best. In the early days of being raw, I used to hear people talking about green drinks and I hadn't a clue what they meant. I came to understand it was just the juice of green vegetables, but I still wasn't sure which ones. Now I have green juice every day and it's an integral part of my daily routine, I wouldn't be without it. Here is my basic recipe. If I sat and tried to eat my way through this many vegetables every day, it would take me a long time and I'd end up with a tummy ache from all that fibre. By juicing, I get all my nutrients in an assimilable form, with no pressure on my digestion.
- 1/2 cucumber
- 2 sticks celery
- 1/2 lettuce
- 1 small head broccoli
- 1 more portion green veg e.g. 1/2 cauliflower, 1 bulb fennel, 2 heads chicory, 250 g spinach, 250 g kale
- sprig herbs eg parsley, coriander, dill, mint, basil
Prepare your veg for the juicer. Juice and drink straightaway. If you're looking for extra nutrition, stir in a tablespoon of spirulina or barleygrass.
You can use a centrifugal juicer for making green juice, but you're only going to produce about half as much juice as you would if you were using one of the high power juicers. Basically, the more you can invest in purchasing a juicer, the better quality juice you're going to get.
